80年前にコミックに登場して以来、「スーパーマン」のすべてのコミック版は長年の恋人であるロイス・レーンを愛する様子が描かれてきた。作者のトム・テイラー氏は、インタビューで「この仕事のオファーを受けたとき、『DCユニバースに新しいスーパーマンを登場させるなら、またストレートの白人の救世主を登場させるのは機会損失のような気がする』と思いました」と語った。
全米では、この発表に対し肯定的な意見がほとんどを占め、LGBTQ先進国らしい反応がうかがえる。また、スーパーマンは過去作で白人至上主義者と戦うなど、アメリカのあらゆる正義の象徴としての役割を担っていると言われており、今後の展開に対する多くの期待も寄せられている。
この事実を明かした10月11日は、レズビアン、ゲイ、バイセクシャル、トランスジェンダーの人々を支援するためのナショナル・カミングアウト・デーと制定されている。
